Surabaya Week 2
by prudence on 03-Aug-2013Another full and busy week, mostly devoted to trying to get more Indonesian into my head.
But again we've had a little time off. This week we managed to:
-- Visit the House of Sampoerna, where workers roll clove cigarettes at astonishing speeds;
-- Visit a couple of temples in Chinatown (the very simple Boen Bio and the wayang-sporting Hong Tiek Hian, the oldest temple in Surabaya);
-- Try out some more Surabaya fare, including the best-by-far version of Rawon Setan, soto ayam, lontong mie, and an incredibly generous version of es dawet at Blauran market;
-- Fail to decide which is better: Excelso's banana wrap with cheese and chocolate, or the hotel's fried banana with cheese;
-- Visit Al Akbar Mosque for the last day of the Ramadan fair (this was where we were served the largest portions of sop buah you can possibly imagine...)
-- Find Whittaker's Hokey Pokey chocolate in one of the mall supermarkets (can't wait for the Lemon and Paeroa to make it over here).
