Melbourne's little ways

by prudence on 01-Nov-2010
I love Melbourne, as you can probably tell from my posts.

But I'm NOT a fan of its ultra-changeable weather. Before I came here, people warned me about its "four-seasons-in-one-day" approach to things meteorological, and I just thought, yeah right -- that has the ring of the urban legend to me.

But it's true. In fact, it's an understatement.

We had some old friends staying for the weekend. Here's how the weather went:

Friday: 28.4 degrees; mega-windy; nearly got blown away having lunch at the end of St Kilda Pier; gritty; we all got things stuck in our throats as we window-shopped the Greek places along Lonsdale Street; needed the aircon when we had dinner up on Lygon Street.

Saturday: threatening rain in the morning, but warm; needed to peel off the jackets as we breakfasted in Block Place and took in the spring fashions at David Jones and Melbourne Central; a veritable downpour at mid-day; we just got home before the worst of it; downpour continued all day -- turned on the TV to see how Victoria Derby Day was going, and witnessed wet race-horses, muddy jockeys, soaked picnickers, and drooping fascinators.

Sunday: rained till mid-morning; local flooding; COLD -- needed my gloves to walk to the Lindt cafe on Collins Street.

I guess I don't even need to say that the sun came out just as our guests were leaving.

Melbourne, Melbourne, Melbourne...
