Walking Notts: Fledborough Viaduct

During our Wigsley expedition, we walked a bit of the ~{purplepost~=1356~;text~=former Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast railway line~;target~=sustrans~}, which now forms part of the Sustrans route between Sheffield and Lincoln. Today we did another chunk.

It was a chilly and strangely-lit day:

We parked in South Clifton, and walked first in the direction of North Clifton. First item of interest: the ~{link~= https://southwellchurches.nottingham.ac.uk/n-and-s-clifton/hintro.php ~;text~=Church of St George the Martyr~;target~=georgemartyr~}, which serves both villages.

I really love these village churches. They're ancient and atmospheric, and the quirkiness of the design -- no two are alike -- makes them all distinctive. We're missing out on the interiors (we're not going "in" places at the moment), but I still like poking around the graveyards, and sussing out the peculiarities.

According to the signboard at the end, the Fledborough Viaduct was built in 1896 to carry the Chesterfield to Lincoln line over the Trent. It used a stunning nine million bricks...

Disused since the 1980s, it now offers excellent views:

And its panels also sport some cool street art (plus, inevitably, some less edifying offerings...)

I'm very much enjoying these little walks. You don't have to go far, and there's always something of interest.
