Top five in Yogya: Week 2
by prudence on 25-Feb-2011
1. Watching the graceful dancing at the Kraton on Sunday morning.
2. Taking the very efficient TransJogja bus service into town.
3. Eating es teler: This is a dessert/meal made of coconut milk, coconut, durian, avocado, and crushed ice -- refreshing and delicious.
4. Enjoying a wide variety of bakwan (fritters) over the course of a week's afternoon teas.
5. Being warmly welcomed on my introductory visit to Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, where I'll start my temporary job next week.
Of course, all this has been rather overshadowed by the truly shocking news coming out of New Zealand. Along with many FB friends, I've been following Christchurch's catastrophic earthquake with a mixture of horror and disbelief. I'm humbled by the courage of the rescuers and survivors, and soul-sore for the ones killed and bereaved.
