A highly civilized interlude

by prudence on 17-Jul-2011
Today was a working day.

But there was a wonderful interlude in the middle when we went to hear the Attacca Quartet playing Janacek's String Quartet No. 2 ("Intimate Letters") as part of the 6th Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. This was one of a series of similar events held in interesting buildings throughout the CBD today, absolutely free. Awesome idea.

Loved the music, and also enjoyed the venue, the Myer Mural Hall. This was originally the department store's dining hall, completed in 1933, and rejoices in 10 beautiful (if slightly incongruous) murals by Napier Waller, a couple of sets of graceful "mannequin stairs" (the space was also used for fashion shows), and three mega-chandeliers.

ABC were recording the performance, so you got to watch the cameraman being rolled up and down the left aisle on his little trolley thing, as the music soared around you.

After this, we had croissants at Laurent. I have already had cause to rave about their almond croissants. Trust me, their chocolate and almond ones are just as good...

Back to work after that, but oh, how cheered...
