What I will really miss about Melbourne

by prudence on 11-Oct-2011
Parrots. Nothing lifts your spirits like the chattering and squawking and squabbling of these bright, sociable little guys, who always contrive to look like they're having fun.

Trams. Clang, rumble, squeak -- the ultimate way to get around a city.

South Melbourne Market. The atmosphere is great; the fresh produce is a treat for the senses; and the old Greek guys gathered round their favourite big table putting the world to rights always make me smile. Hope I'll be doing something similar when I'm their age.

The cafes. Especially Monarch, Gas, Koko Black, and Laurent -- none being mentioned for the first time on these pages.

The streetscapes. I love the laneways; I love the BIG, HEAVY, SERIOUS Victorian Gothic, built from gold money to make an impression; I love the lacy wrought-iron suburban verandas.

The sport. The year revolves around the AFL, the Spring Racing Carnival, the Australian Open, the Formula 1. I'm not a massive sports fan, but I like that there's always something buzzy going on -- right here right now.

Such a lot to miss... It's been great. I'm sure we'll be back. But if we're not -- thanks, it's been really, really nice knowing you.
