St George's Day

by prudence on 25-Apr-2012
We always celebrate St George's Day, for reasons I'm not allowed to disclose.

Today the Big Day fell on a Monday. So on pre-St George's Day Saturday, we went into town to buy the St George's Day present -- a photo scanner, for the purposes of reducing our collection of prints to a collection of pixels. Tried Imbi Plaza first -- it's a little run-down and forlorn, this place, although the people are friendly and helpful. Trade has moved to Low Yat, which is much more glitzy and modern, and so did we. Here, we easily located the scanner of our dreams, bought it, and then refreshed ourselves with iced tea from Cup Bon in the food court downstairs. It came with free pearls. Always nice to have a drink you can chew. I couldn't quite manage all mine, so Nigel spent an enjoyable quarter of an hour pearl-fishing.

On the day before the great event, we went into town again, this time to have lunch at the Old China Cafe. The premises, which are nicely kitted out with old photos, mirrors, steep stairs, and a cute little roof garden next to the toilets, were actually the old guild hall of the Selangor & Federal Territory Laundry Association. We had lemon chicken, assam pork, spicy vegetables, and coconut rice, and followed it up with two whole puddings -- a dinky little sago pudding with coconut milk and gula melaka (which is that wonderfully caramelly dark sugar), and bubur cha cha (more sago, but disaggregated; more coconut milk, but warm; and little bits of yam and sweet potato). Yum. You start to feel you would kill for things in coconut milk and gula melaka.

Then we made our way to KLCC, the huge mall-auditorium-mosque-and-park complex that adjoins the Petronas Towers. Enjoyed the exuberant bird song in the park, which the guys kept up valiantly despite the afternoon heat.

That evening an amazing sunset gave way to an impressive lightning storm over the hills behind the city. It was like a huge laser show, with flashing backlit clouds, and lightning arcing between them.

Finally, the great day... A working day for me, so the celebrations consisted of breakfast at Old Town White Coffee, and evening desserts at Tong Pak Fu (durian snow ice, black glutinous rice balls with sesame and peanut, and lavender tea).

Hopefully, all that will help to slay a few dragons...
