I'm from Migrantland

One out of every 33 persons in the world today is an international migrant. Yes, that's right. If you put them together -- all 214 million of them -- they would be the fifth most populous country in the world.

Together, they send home a whacking amount of remittances (US$ 440 billion in 2010); and 49% of them are women.

International migrants are people who choose to cross borders. So this figure doesn't include refugees, who are forced to do so (although "choosing" and "being forced" are very blurry terms). Refugees add another 15.4 million to the moving total.

The source doesn't say so explicitly, but I'm guessing this figure can't include undocumented migrants -- because we're really not too sure how many of those there are. A lot, though, if Southeast Asia is anything to go by.

And it doesn't, of course, include internal migrants -- those who move within their country's borders, either permanently or temporarily.

Then there are internally displaced people (who are forced to move within their country's borders, but don't count as refugees because you're a refugee only if you cross borders). They add another 27.5 million.

This information comes from the International Organization for Migration's Facts and Figures page.

They also have a fascinating map that allows you to see where everyone's coming from and going to.

It's like I say -- humans are migrating animals. Governments just have to get with the game.
