Two posts in one day - The ATO again
by nigel on 30-Oct-2012
See here for the relevant earlier post.
Finally just one day ahead of the deadline I packed my Australian Tax return off into the ether (i.e. via mobile internet) using the wonderful ATO e-tax software. Once again this is a pleasure to use.
This year's tax has been complicated by several items.
Becoming (Australian) non-tax resident during the year means that you have to think a bit more carefully about where you record stuff.
What would usually all go in one section, can go in that one (because you was there when you got it), that one (because you wasn't there when you got it but no tax was deducted) or left off entirely (because you wasn't there but it was taxed at source).
As an added bonus I was waiting for a piece of tax information to arrive which never did and when I chased it up it was apparently all sorted last year.
And finally as a follow on to the previous post where I phoned the ATO about something they had not sent I had to do the same again for the same reason. It would appear that some part of the ATO computer system reads this blog and was so impressed by the nice things I said about it that it now refuses to send me any correspondence that requests money.
Hopefully it will communicate good news as I am up for a reasonable size refund this year.
