First week back

Working hard again now, of course, preparing for next term. But it's been a very satisfying week. Highlights:

-- Being home again, and enjoying all the great things around us

-- Receiving two big boxes of goodies as a Lebaran present from the university

-- Meeting up with a friend at Dae Jang Geum, and reacquainting ourselves with the pleasures of Korean food

-- Getting Rufus's back paw fixed at nearly 10 o'clock on the ringroad, courtesy of a kind person who had already shut up his workshop for the night, but obligingly unlocked everything to help us out

-- Sampling a local vendor's bubur kacang ijo or mung bean porridge (different from the version we used to have in Malaysia, but equally delicious, and at 7,000 rupiah for two portions, it will become another stalwart, I'm sure)

-- Having lunch at Omahe Mbok Giyem, where the pleasantness of the setting (a very gracious traditional house down a quiet village road) is capped only by the tastiness of the food (we recommend the ayam bakar, which comes with sayur lodeh, rice, and sambal; the nasi goreng mercon, or firecracker fried rice, which is wonderfully spicy; and the kopi tubruk, which comes complete with a little cake of ginger-infused palm sugar)

-- Enjoying, with new and old friends, the post-Lebaran open home at the awesome Radio Buku, which houses a super little library and a newspaper collection going back to 1903

-- Continuing to work our way through the cake list at the Ministry of Coffee (we highly recommend both the potato and raisin cake and the lemon and grape cake)

-- Inventing an excellent dessert to use up all the crumbs at the bottom of the Lebaran egg roll biscuit tin (deliciously simple: sprinkle them on strawberries and thick yoghurt...)

So lucky to be here...
