A round-up of recent culinary experiences

Omah Dhuwur was our swanky place this month. Particularly loved the Es Lombok, which is a cool drink flavoured with chili, lemon grass, cinnamon, and black pepper. Absolutely delicious. I love these Javanese drinks... But their snapper in curry sauce was good, too, and came with perfectly steamed vegetables. For dessert we shared banana in palm sugar. You can't go too wrong there, I guess.

Kalimilk was another new discovery. (Note that this is an annoying website, by the way -- all style, but little ease of access to information...) We were the oldest people in the establishment (by at least 30 years), but the milk drinks really are good.

I had batagor for the first time at Es Teler. These are crispy fried stuffed tofu packages, served with a spicy peanut sauce. Definitely an experience worth repeating.

And during our weekend up at Kaliurang, I was introduced to garang asem. (In this article, it is touted as Balinese food, but there are plenty of sources that claim it is Javanese, and I am totally ill-equipped to make a judgement...) I very much enjoyed the clean, sour taste.
