Not far from the graves of the old kings at Imogiri, there is another graveyard. This one is for seniman dan budayawan (artists and cultural figures).

We climbed the rough steps to the top of the hill. There are fine views and breezes up there, and the dry rustle of teak leaves.

We then worked our way down the terraces of graves.

Such a serene place to be laid to rest.

Under the sheltering trees, the frangipani, and the bougainvillea. With the butterflies, caterpillars, and birdsong to remind you of the continuing preciousness of life...



...and the solemn graves and weathering grave ornaments -- poems, pictures, sculptures -- to remind all who come to visit you of the passing of time and the inevitability of death.
