Cows in the city

As I've already noted, I love our neighbourhood. I guess some people would come here, and see only tat, or urban decay, or incomplete modernization, or the destruction of nature. And, yeah, you get bits of all that.

But I just love the randomness. I love the small trees growing haphazardly out of buildings; the eclectic mix of religious establishments; the grunge of the old and the new, the traditional and the modern -- the cows and the city.

As we strolled past one of the temples this morning, the bell was dinging, and the recorded shawms were playing, and the incense was wafting, and people were worshipping. At another, the Buddha was just contemplating. Yet another is still waiting to emerge from its laundry to praise the heavens properly.

Our bit of the city. It's pulsing; it's thrusting; it's evolving. It's beautiful; it's ugly. Most of all, it's home...
