I still can't believe how the English food scene has moved on since we left in 1997. There is really such a plethora of eating and drinking establishments now, and the quality is generally very good.

Highlights:

-- Piping hot tea in bone china cups

-- Lincolnshire plum bread, toasted, with butter

-- Bru's classic waffle (which is cinnamon and fruit bread, waffle-ized)

-- Goat's cheese baguette, with ginger and apricot chutney

-- Roast pork with Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, and apple sauce

-- Battenberg cake

-- Eton mess
