Little India

I have to recommend The Original Singapore Walks. I did their Little India trip this morning, and very much enjoyed the wealth of information, the "hands-on-ness", and the company of fellow walkers. Really good.
Little India is a great area. We stayed there the very first time we were in Singapore, and I remember getting off the bus, walking down the street, and thinking, this is great, this is very, very different.
So, it was a morning full of gold, ginger tea, henna, spices, fortunes, paan, jasmine, and jackfruit. I now know a great place to buy Indian sweets and snacks, AND I can put on a sari...
A couple of weeks ago we had a very memorable meal at Kashmir on Race Course Road. Tasty and ample -- two starters and three mains with rice and naan were more than enough for four people. No room for dessert, sadly. I loved the chilli lassi -- a brilliant accompaniment to the food.
I'm having a kind of India thing at the moment. A couple of weeks ago, I went to the Asian Civilizations Museum's special exhibition of Mughal jewellery. Totally stunning. Possibly the sparkliest, shiniest exhibition I have ever been to (and I adore sparkly and shiny). Then I spent last Friday evening touring the rest of their South Asia treasures, before going down to the basement theatre to watch an amazing display of Kathak-style dance -- a beautiful combination of gorgeous movement and graceful stillness, with the various performances interspersed with readings from Rabindranath Tagore's "Shah Jahan".
I would so love to go back to India...
