The big wide world of Indonesian food

by prudence on 18-May-2010
Indonesia's huge, of course. So its food offering is very diverse, and we've only just begun to scratch the surface. Today we discovered rojak -- fruit salad with a sweet, spicy, peanutty topping. Amazingly delicious. We've also had Manado-style food a couple of times. Fish or chicken rica-rica, for example, comes laden with chilli and very tasty. And representing the local area, soto ayam betawi is a flavoursome chicken soup with coconut.

Lamien (hand-pulled) noodles are Chinese, rather than Indonesian, I believe, but I'd not met them till I came here. It's fascinating watching the cook produce beautiful noodles just with his bare hands (absolutely no hidden noodle-making machine). They're very tasty served with prawns, wontons, bok choy, spring onions, and hot and sour soup.

The sate is just stunning, of course, and we had a great meal on Sunday evening at Sate Khas Senayan, which seems to have several branches throughout the city. Chicken and lamb sate (probably the nicest I've ever had), crispy crab with mango, tofu in soy and sesame, veges with pecel (a kind of peanut sauce) -- all very, very good.

Pricey, but very atmospheric, is the Cafe Batavia down on Taman Fatahillah. They have tasty and filling dim sum, including a yummy glutinous rice and chicken package, wrapped up in lotus leaves, and a crab and mushroom mixture, wrapped up in tofu skin. It's worth visiting if only for the collection of photos in the toilets...

And I have to mention the avocado juice with chocolate. I don't know if this is unique to Indonesia, but it's a meal in itself, and really delicious.
