KL diary: Rain and colour
by prudence on 27-Nov-2017It seems to me that the rainy season has been rainier than usual. And cooler.
Cool weather means soup. Vegetable miso soup from Fuji Sushi in Pavilion, for example.
Rainy weather means staying in the transport system as long as you can, rather than venturing out. But hey, you can always take photos... Videos even...
And rain needs to be offset by lots of colour. Like this gift of Terengganu batik. Isn't this amazing? I remember ogling the batik shops during our trip to Kuala Terangganu more than five years ago. Well, now I have some...
You can get another shot of colour from Galeri Petronas's thought-provoking new exhibition, entitled Alegori: Contemporary Art Expressions from Malay Manuscripts.
Not all was colour here. There's a creepy little exhibit that will send little rainy shivers down your back.
And of course there's always that stalwart for depression-beating, the MPO. This weekend we heard an amazing concert featuring works from the 17th and 18th centuries (Brescianello, Rittler, Bach, and Mozart).
The whole programme sparkled with elegance and refinement, but I have to particularly mention the Ciaconna by Philipp Jakob Rittler (1637-1690). A ciaconna consists of a repeated bass motif over which variations are embroidered. This particular one consisted of 36 repetitions of four measures, and is a bit of a speciality for conductor Paul Dyer. The result was quite magical (and in parts sounded so contemporary that you could imagine its extemporizations fitting quite happily into a jazz bar venue).
Let it rain. There's always colour in KL.
