KL diary: Mooncakes, maths, and more
by prudence on 21-Aug-2016This week we kicked off the mooncake season, with a traditional baked skin mooncake, with dragon fruit and durian filling. Quill have adorable little warriors on display.
We also watched a maths movie: The Man Who Knew Infinity. This is a biopic, featuring an obscure young man from Chennai who had an amazing ability to do maths. He was "discovered", through trials and tribulations became successful in England, and died tragically young. It's a simple enough story of overcoming adversity. But Patel and Irons act it well, it's beautifully shot, and the result is something bigger than its parts, I think. I found it moving to watch this partnership unfold, bridging ethnicities, religions, cultures, and academic traditions.
We explored two new cafes this week. The League of Captains is another denizen of The Row, Jalan Doraisamy. We went for Sunday brekkie. The choice is not huge, but my chicken sourdough sandwich was excellent, and the decor is very cool.
Ice Dreams Cafe @ Damansara Kim is a Kapiti-ice-cream-serving slice of paradise. We met up with two friends there (and took along our resident kiwi, Kevin). We limbered up with the six-scoop-special (feijoa -- FEIJOA! -- blood orange, apple crumble, lemongrass and ginger, hokey pokey, and chocolate).
Once in our stride, we tackled some more ambitious stuff. Welsh cakes with ice-cream and a crunchy topping (I've never had a Welsh cake before -- the consistency sits nicely between a scone and a biscuit). A waffle, generously proportioned, and pleasantly soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. And most intriguing of all -- our pick from the range that offers a rather different take on affogati. Rosemary-infused Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) and smoked sea salt, with cheese peppercorn biscotti and vanilla ice-cream. This is a much better description that I can manage. Suffice it to say I found the unusual combo delicious, and would happily try more of these offerings.
In other news, Merdeka Day is next week, and everyone's flagging up ready.
And there's been another metamorphosis of the Tudi Gong...
