Wonderful weekend for a foody

by prudence on 18-Apr-2012
Friday evening -- Old Town White Coffee -- curry puffs, and seafood wrapped in tofu skin and deep-fried -- about RM20

Some people are sniffy about this chain. An imitation kopitiam, etc, etc. But they're good if you want a bit of space and a bit of time (old-style kopitiams are not really places for hanging around in, unless you're old, male, and in the country). And we have one right next door, so if it's raining (which it often is at the moment), it's a good bet.

Saturday breakfast -- Di Naina -- roti canai and teh tarik -- RM5.80

We have this breakfast at least once a week. Depending on availability, we get two curries -- a vegetable one and a fishy one, which is spicier. Love this...

Saturday lunch -- Lammeeya at Empire -- lam mee -- about RM30

This is a kind of thick soup, with big, fat, yellow noodles, little meat balls, prawns, chicken, and lots of veges. Nigel had a really fragrant gingery thing, and we got a free bun stuffed with that yummy coconut and gula melaka mix. Will definitely return here.

Saturday afternoon snack -- Boost, Low Cost Carrier Terminal -- mango smoothie -- free!

This came about in a weird way. A FB friend told me this morning that Boost were giving away free drinks today to people called Linda... Interesting idea, I thought, but I don't think I'm going to be near a Boost. Anyway, we had to go out to the airport to meet up with some friends who were briefly passing through KL -- and there was a Boost! Yummy smoothie.

Saturday dinner -- Downtown KLIA Seafoods -- assam squid, claypot beancurd, black pepper beef, fried rice -- RM100 for four

If you've been reading carefully, you'll have spotted that we're now at a different airport... And yes, we had been waiting for our friends at entirely the wrong place. Luckily, we'd been lucky with the schedule so far, and were able to jump into the trans-terminal shuttle, and still make it in time. The complex that contains this restaurant and an expansive foodcourt is about five minutes away from the airport. And the food was very good.

Sunday breakfast -- in the flat -- pandan cake -- RM 1.85

Just packet cake -- but moist and delicious.

Sunday lunch -- Din Tai Fung -- xiao long bao (the most exquisite dumplings), crispy packages of shrimp and mango, pumpkin in a kind of tempura batter and flavoured with salted egg, a delicious tofu dish, and for dessert, sesame dumplings in red bean soup -- about RM 50

We first came across Din Tai Fung in Singapore, and you just can't beat them for awesome flavours. Definitely makes you want to check out Taiwan... (Especially as Tuesday evening took us to ZenQ at The Pyramid, where we had matcha shaved ice with sweet red beans -- very nice.)

Sunday tea -- fresh fruit -- the fruit stall in the new Carrefour foodcourt -- RM1.20 a serving

The yellow mango and the pineapple are spectacularly delicious at the moment.

I worked most of this weekend. But such good food opportunities still made it feel like a weekend well spent.

You have got to love Malaysia...
