Sunday in Yogya

by prudence on 08-Mar-2012
Memory lane stretches on...

Breakfast at Bumbu Pawon.

Then an excursion. First, Kota Gede to see one of the silver factories. Nice work.

Then, Imogiri to visit the tomb of Sultan Agung and other representatives of the Mataram kingdom. You dress up (and I felt unwontedly exposed in my shoulder-revealing top), then wait outside the tomb until there is room to enter. You climb in through the low outer doorway, and then through the narrow opening into the tomb. It's lit only by a couple of candles; incense floats in from outside; and people are fervently praying before the tomb, which is covered with pink flower petals.

I found it hard to know what to wish for... The difficulty is that I want more of the same, I guess... The chance to be here, in Southeast Asia, with Nigel, doing interesting stuff...

Once outside, we had a walk round the moss-covered, rose-sprinkled compound, and then drank some hot, gingery, herbal wedang uwuh.

Finally, Parangtritis, via that classic Javanese scenery of brilliantly green rice paddies and mountains. This beach doesn't seem to have the availability of seafood restaurants that Pantai Depok does. But it was good for strolling and people-watching.

We rounded off the day with a drink at the colonially pleasing Phoenix.

More photos of today (and the rest of the week) are here.
