Saturday in Yogya
by prudence on 03-Mar-2012
It rained and rained last night. It's rainier than I remember it being last year.
Unfortunately, the rain didn't deter the two cats who spent a large part of the night bickering with each other very close to our bedroom...
Today has been a real walk down memory lane... Spicy noodles and hot orange for breakfast, from the Acehnese place. And a trip to the tailor's to get my trousers shortened. (This cost 5,000 rupiah, or 50 cents, or 1.5 ringgit. As I don't want to burden the household help with two people's washing, we also took a bundle of laundry to a washing establishment -- 3,000 rupiah per kilo, so we're getting quite a consignment of washing done for less than a dollar, or three ringgit.)
Then we took the bus into town, had a look in Mirota (but failed to buy any batik), and went to Taman Pintar to pick up the English-Indonesian dictionary I stupidly failed to buy last year when I bought its brother Indonesian-English one. Walked on to Prawirotaman (was it always this far?), and had es dawet at Via-Via, followed by a nice little appetizer of fried tofu, tempeh, and cassava.
Took a becak back into town, and got caught up in one of the interviews-to-schoolgirls that we had so much experience of in 2010. I didn't get much of that last year -- they must prefer couples.
We continued on along a now much busier Jalan Malioboro to check out the Periplus bookshop in Mal Malioboro, and then we taxied back for a cat-necessitated afternoon rest.
At about 4.30, our afternoon snack arrived -- fragrant sweetened tea with a little doughnut.
It is very good to be back here. Yogya is definitely another of those places that feels very much like home.
