Little trips round Yogya -- 1 -- Tembi and Plaosan

by prudence on 06-Apr-2013
My goal (God willing) is to go to one new place each week.

Last week we took a taxi to Tembi, which is not very far from us. I kind of went to Tembi once before, and had a pleasant wander round some craft workshops and a lovely lunch at d'Omah. But on that occasion, I actually missed the key part, which is the Rumah Budaya. So this visit repaired that omission. There are interesting displays of old photographs and magazines, puppets, kris, and various beautifully carved bits of furniture, and an eclectic selection of paintings. Unfortunately, the on-site cafe was booked out by a group, but d'Omah did us another good lunch. Full marks for the smoked catfish and the rojak buah.

Today, the goal was the Plaosan Temples, not far from Prambanan. A bit of a mission getting there, as the local pos taxi (on whom we rely to get to the bus station) claimed to have no taxis available. No drivers, apparently. What?? So we walked up to the main road, and flagged down a taxi to go to Giwangan bus station. From there we got two Transjogja buses to Prambanan, and then a motorized becak (a motorbike with an armchair on the front) to Candi Plaosan.

Plaosan is wonderful. With their stone pinnacles and pennants, its temples look like huge galleons adrift in a sea of rubble. There's lush green countryside all around. There are very few visitors. It's serene and atmospheric.

Excellent lunch back in Prambanan: two lots of tasty mie ayam (chicken noodle soup), refreshing es buah (fruit with ice, syrup, and a little sweetened milk), and iced drinks came to 20,000 rupiah (AU$ 2, or 6 ringgit).
