Today we went to an exhibition at this little gallery tucked away behind a bank of foliage on Jl D.I. Panjaitan.

The theme was Paruh Baya or Middle Age. To be honest, I didn't like it. There didn't seem to be any images I could really engage with, and certainly the average viewer would come away with the impression that middle age is a very, very weird business indeed. Which it's not, in my opinion... So far, I think middle age is pretty OK, and I certainly wouldn't swap my experience for another dose of youth.

However, the gallery itself, curled round a little garden, makes a lovely, intimate exhibition space. And I'm really grateful that we have this vibrant art scene in Yogya. I wish we'd got into it earlier.
