Top five in Yogya: Week 3

by prudence on 09-Mar-2011
A little late here, since it's already Week 4... But here goes:

1. Drinking es dawet -- a delicious concoction of little white stringy things made of rice flour, coconut milk, palm sugar, and ice -- while reading the Jakarta Post in ViaVia.

2. Eating barbecued duck at Tembi, a short bus-ride south of Yogya.

3. Watching bakpia being made -- these are the famous little Yogya cakes, consisting of a thin pastry wrapper and a filling of sweetened mung beans, or cheese, or chocolate, or pineapple. The different constituents are produced via a long and labour-intensive process, and then they are hand-rolled.

4. Climbing the steep learning curve of my first week's teaching at the Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta.

5. Enjoying the lavish and fascinating buffet at Bumbu Desa. Special favourites: a very aromatic nasi liwet, a lovely green chilli chicken, and a wonderfully spicy mango rujak.
