Top five in Yogya: Week 8
by prudence on 09-Apr-2011
1. Eating magelangan (a spicy fried rice and noodles dish -- although at the time I didn't spot the rice -- accompanied by tempeh and cucumber) at a little warung on the outskirts of Yogya.
2. Getting great views of the Mountain. Merapi is a slightly withdrawn and anti-social volcano, and in this season you don't often see her. But a few days ago, we had one wonderful sparkly morning with Merapi and her "helper", Merbabu, on clear display. Any passing paparazzi this week could also have snapped her in a gauzy, figure-hugging cloud wrapper, or experimenting with a cockatoo-style cloud crest.
3. Enjoying a great piece of cake from the Swiss House Bakery as a tea-time treat.
4. Drinking a truly excellent cup of Kalosi Toraja coffee, made from Sulawesi coffee beans, at my favourite Cafe Excelso -- stopped me sleeping, but worth it.
5. Checking out the very beautiful Phoenix Hotel for a Friday evening drink and snack -- a riot of stained glass and opulent decoration.
