More Lombok

by prudence on 11-May-2011
Basically, I loved Lombok, and would happily return.

Here are some of the outstanding experiences:

Most memorable meals on Gili Air -- a fish barbecue at the Wiwin Cafe (a mixture of delicious fat fish, cooked with just the right amount of smokiness, big juicy prawns, and tasty squid); fish kebabs and urap-urap (vegetables with grated coconut and chilli) at the Zipp Bar; tuna kebabs, and eggs in a spicy coconut gravy at the Sandy Beach cafe, on the quieter side of the island, eaten while the heavens opened and the rain poured...

Most memorable meals elsewhere -- I've already mentioned the Green Orry's curry... Its sate was good, too. And then there was the home-cooked feast at Pringgasela -- curried eggs, fried chicken, battered tempeh, tofu stuffed with vegetables, various vege dishes... And Malia's Child, on Gili Meno, although famous for its pizzas, does a mean pumpkin curry.

Best drink -- a margarita from the Zipp Bar, enjoyed right on the beach, with salty popcorn.

Best arts experience -- watching the weavers in Pringgasela, who painstakingly turn out the most gorgeous, vibrantly coloured cloth.

Saddest experience -- in Pringgasela, one beautiful woman, a talented weaver with a really gorgeous face (beautiful bone structure and a dazzling smile) -- told us she wished she had white skin...

Weirdest experience -- completing part of the return-from-Senaru-waterfall walk inside a big waterpipe that makes up part of the irrigation system. In total darkness at times, we were pushed from behind by a powerful current, and as we ducked awkwardly to avoid the occasional overhead spider, the bats overhead deviated gracefully to avoid us bumbling humans.

Biggest disappointment -- we had rotten weather for the snorkelling off Gili Air. Yes, we saw some wonderful fish, and even some turtles (definitely a first for us), but the sea was rough and inhospitable and nasty, which was a great pity.

Best view -- from our breakfast terrace at Pondok Senaru, perched high up a steep, thickly wooded valley laced with beautiful waterfalls, with Mount Rinjani dominating the background, and a group of breakfasting black monkeys enlivening the foreground.
