Little trips round Yogya -- 48 -- Kota Baru

1. Don't bother getting up early to avoid the worst of the city-centre morning traffic, because you won't succeed.

2. Have brekkie at the House of Raminten. They don't have the full menu at that time in the morning, but sego kucing (rice with "cat-sized" little helpings of egg, anchovies, tempe, and sambal) is a good bet.

3. Go for a walk around the leafy, gracious streets of Kota Baru. This area was developed by the Dutch from the 1920s onwards, as the centre of town got more crowded. There are some really beautiful houses in this area, and away from the main roads, it's surprisingly peaceful.

4. Get your routine typhoid injection at the Bethesda Hospital (you can omit this step, of course, but as this institution dates back to 1899, it has historical interest in its own right).

5. Go to Roemi for coffee and ice-cream (the frozen brownies are good). (Actually this is only if you've done Step 4; otherwise you don't really deserve it.)

6. Fight your way back through the manic traffic on Jl Parantritis, thinking how ironic it would be to escape typhoid only to get wiped out on your motorbike.

7. Arrive home, keep your sore arm safely out of trouble, and think what a nice little trip you've had, and how lucky you are.
