Ghosts, clowns, gods, and toys

It has been a week of representations -- figures that represent much more or much less than they physically are.

The other day we finished watching The Ghost, another Korean drama series that has kept us entertained for many an evening.

It's larger than life, of course (although you do actually wonder when you read stories like this one from Bangladesh). It's replete with twists and turns and fortuitous coincidences. And it's formulaic in the extreme -- the long glances among the characters when something is revealed; the losing of evidence at so many crucial moments (copy the file, people, copy the file...); the pursed-lipped, brooding hero; the wicked chaebol character...

But, really, it's superbly watchable. It absorbed us effortlessly into its world of cybercrime and Koreanness.

What was the eponymous "ghost", actually? Well, an email account, it seems, from which came an instruction to Hades (the pseudonym of an ace hacker) to recover a file. In the doing of which Hades discovers the video of a murder. Something like that anyway... It was 20 episodes ago, and a LOT has happened since then.

But the drama's central theme of revenge means there are actually ghosts everywhere. People die, but the effects of their death go on reverberating -- including on massive billboards in the middle of Seoul.

Not quite so many fans seem to have dissected this one, in comparison with the saturation coverage of That Winter, the Wind Blows. But there is still plenty of painstaking and meticulous analysis.

And so to my other representational experiences this week.

I unexpectedly came across a picture of a clown. But I'm not going to reproduce it... Because these are sad days.

And you will recall our surprise and distress on realizing that our local Tudi Gong had been attacked. Well, this week, on the way to the market, we came across this:

Don't ask. I don't know...

To finish on a lighter note, the toys had a bath this week. They really look much fresher now. Cuthbert needs a minor operation on his snout, but otherwise, everyone survived well.
