In and out of Jepara

So yesterday we finally managed to bust out of Karimunjawa.

Up till the last minute there was a doubt, because we turned up at the wrong jetty...

No-one, in all the lengthy ticket-buying performance, had ever thought to mention that today's ferry was going not from the ferry port but from the other port, a sizeable hoof across town. It was a nasty moment, therefore, when we presented ourselves to get on the boat at the ferry jetty, only to be told: "This one is for Semarang. Yours is over there."

We set off at a panicky clip, really spooked. But not far along the street, Nigel spotted an opportunity to commandeer a couple of young lads and their motorbikes to transport us across town.

So the story ends well. We caught the boat, albeit with little time to spare; the journey was less rough than the last experience; and we got safely to the other side almost exactly on time.

Even better, we were able to get tickets on this morning's bus to Yogya, and it will pick us up at the hotel.

At which point, we will be back on schedule in terms of the itinerary, though not of course in terms of my work, which is piling up inexorably.

The other casualty is Jepara, as we were literally in yesterday and out today. Which is a great pity, as it gives every impression of being a lovely little town.

Tree-lined streets, handsome buildings, a pretty alun-alun, and a lofty Benteng were about all we were able to register this time. But this whole area would repay a much longer visit, so let's hope we get to do that one day.
