A day out in St Kilda

by prudence on 19-Jun-2010
Ingredients:

Several hours, fine weather, a few dollars, and a tram ticket.

Method:

Start by having breakfast in one of Melbourne's toasty cafes.

Then take the tram to Port Melbourne, and walk along the prom to St Kilda. Take time to enjoy the views of a choppy Port Phillip Bay, and the company of thousands of lorrikeets, who spend their days hooning around among the palm trees and telling each other (loudly) about their adventures.

Walk down the pier at St Kilda, and have a pot of tea in the restored Kiosk, while you gaze out to sea.

Then take a ride on the Scenic Railway at Luna Park. This is the "oldest continually operating roller coaster in the world", so you can ride safe in the knowledge that you're part of history, and this thing has been scaring the bejeebers out of people for a good long time. As well as "heart-stopping dips and turns", the website promises, "you will also experience the most stunning views of Port Phillip Bay St. Kilda has to offer". To be honest, once you've got going, you're too busy hanging on to notice any stunning views...

Next, walk along Acland Street. This is the home of some truly wonderful cake shops, and the French expression for window-shopping (leche-vitrine -- licking the windows) is highly appropriate here.

Pick up something delicious from Monarch Cakes (today it was Polish baked cheesecake), and take it home on the tram to eat with coffee.
